2008 Award Descriptions

Individual Awards

Donald L. McCullough Leadership Award
Eligible nominees: Full-time Undergraduate Students
Monetary Award: $1250
     This award recognizes individual students who have made significant contributions to the University community through leadership and service during their tenure as a student.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • Recipient(s) will have demonstrated a significant contribution to the University community through their leadership of, and/or involvement in an initiative(s) that have had University-wide impact and is representative of the highest level of student leadership and involvement.
  • Nominees must not have been on any form of academic probation during the past academic year.
  • Nominees must not have been found in violation of any University policy during the past year.

Emerging Leaders Award
Eligible Nominees: Full-time first or second year Storrs Undergraduate Students
Monetary Award: $1000*
     This award recognizes individual student(s) that, despite not holding a visible, established leadership position on campus, nonetheless has actively demonstrated attributes of a leader through his/her actions and character. Examples of such actions might include, but are not limited to, leadership in a campus organization and/or program, significant contributions to the enhancement of the campus community, or the advocacy of issues/positions that effect students.

Additional Award Criteria:

  • Nominees must not have been on any form of academic probation during the past academic year.
  • Nominees must not have been found in violation of any University policy during the past year.

Martha and Albert Cohen Scholarship for Enhancing Community
Eligible Nominees: Full-time University of Connecticut Students
Monetary Award: $750
     This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students in good standing on the basis of financial need and evidence of a significant active commitment to eliminating bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination and to foster tolerance and understanding among people. Preference is given to students who have actively participated in social service work, advocacy, or humanitarian work for improving inter-group relations.

Additional Award Criteria:

  • "Evidence of significant commitment to eliminating bigotry…'" must have occurred during the past academic year.
  • Related activities/demonstration of commitment may extend beyond University Community.
  • Nominees must not have been on any form of academic/scholastic probation during the academic year.

     This scholarship was established and sponsored by Stephen I. Cohen ('65')in honor of his parents Martha and Albert Cohen.
Matthew B. Schechter Scholarship
Eligible Nominees: Full-time University of Connecticut Students
Monetary Award: $750
     The Matthew B. Schechter Scholarship is a monetary award made annually to a deserving student on the basis of citizenship, need, scholarship, contribution to the University and contributions to the causes of human rights and human dignity, civil liberties and freedom of thought.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • "Contribution to the University and contributions to the causes of human rights and human dignity, civil liberties and freedom of thought…" must have occurred during the past academic year on a University campus.
  • Nominees must not have been on any form of academic/scholastic probation during the academic year.

The family and friends of Matthew B. Schechter established this scholarship in 1969.
Student Multicultural Award
Eligible Nominees: Full-time Storrs Undergraduate Students
Monetary Award: $500
     First given in 1997, this award recognizes individual students who have contributed to encouraging and enhancing the diversity of any aspect of the University Community at the Storrs Campus.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • "Contributions encouraging and enhancing diversity..." must be demonstrated through a significant action
  • Activities encouraging/enhancing diversity must have been directed towards the University community.
  • Nominees must not have been on any form of academic/scholastic probation during the academic year.

     The Office of the Vice Provost for Multicultural and International Affairs is the proud sponsor of the Student Multicultural Award.
Building Community Award
Eligible Nominees: Full-time Storrs Undergraduate Students
Monetary Award: $1000*
     This award honors a student(s) that has initiated and/or actively engaged in an activity that has significantly contributed to the sense of community on campus. This project may be a single event or series of activities.

Additional Award Criteria:

  • Project should have been significantly advanced since April 2004.
  • The project should directly impact the enhancement of community among various campus community members.
  • Students must have been in good academic/conduct standing for the entire academic year.

Individual Community Service Award
Eligible Nominees: Full-time Storrs Undergraduate Student
Monetary Award: $1000
     This award honors a student(s) that has initiated and/or actively engaged in a community service project(s). The project may be a single event or a series of activities. This award is intended for those engaged in activities that offer direct service, as opposed to fundraising or lobbying activities, to a community external to the University.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • The project should be one that required: a) the delivery of service directly to the ultimate beneficiary and/or b) the development of a new service program/project designed to directly benefit an individual/organization.
  • Project should have been significantly advanced during the past academic year.
     The project should directly benefit an individual/group in the off-campus community.
     Students must have been in good academic/conduct standing for the entire academic year

Spirer/Dueker Student Humanitarian Achievement Award
Eligible Nominee: Full-time University of Connecticut Students
Monetary Award: $750
     The Spirer/Dueker Student Humanitarian Achievement Award honors an undergraduate student on a University of Connecticut campus for outstanding contributions to public service.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • Nominees must have accomplished/engaged in a valuable public service objective or developed and implemented a useful or original approach to solving a social, governmental or legal problem within the past academic year.
  • Nominees must have demonstrated a concern for others that benefits society and impacts positively on his/her personal and professional life.
  • Nominees must not have been on any form of academic/scholastic probation during the academic year.
The award was established by Louise and Herbert Spirer and Marilyn Dueker retired faculty members from the University of Connecticut-Stamford campus.
Student Organization Advisor Award
Eligible Nominees: Advisors to a registered student organization
Monetary Award: $750
     This award honors an advisor of a student organization who has provided outstanding service and advisement to an organization.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • Student organization must have been properly registered with the Department of Campus Activities during the year.
  • Recipient will have demonstrated outstanding support for and advisement of a student organization in pursuit of its goals.
  • Individual nominees must have met the criteria to be a student organization advisor.
  • Individual must be an employee of the University in good standing.

Outstanding Graduate/Teaching Assistant Award
Eligible Nominees: University of Connecticut Graduate/Teaching Assistants
Monetary Award: $250

     This award recognizes a Graduate Assistant who goes above and beyond their assigned responsibilities by contributing their time, energy, and talents to further the growth and development of undergraduate students on campus

Additional Award Criteria:
  • Nominees must demonstrate significant contributions to the growth and development of undergraduate students beyond their typical graduate assistant responsibilities.
  • Nominees must be registered as a graduate student at UConn
  • Nominees must be in good standing with the University

Individual Husky Pride Award
Eligible Nominees: Full-time Storrs Undergraduate Students
Monetary Award: $1000
     This award honors an individual for outstanding external representation of the pride and spirit associated with being a part of the University of Connecticut.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • Students must have been in good academic/conduct standing for the entire academic year.

Student Organization Awards

Organization Community Service Award
Eligible Nominees: Student Organizations
Monetary Award: $500
This award honors a student organization that has initiated and/or actively engaged in a community service project. The project may be a single event or a series of activities. This award is intended for those engaged in activities that offer direct service, as opposed to fundraising or lobbying activities, to a community external to the University.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • The project should be one that required: a) the delivery of service directly to the ultimate beneficiary and/or b) the development of a new service program/project designed to directly benefit an individual/organization.
  • Project should have been significantly advanced during the past academic year.
  • The project should directly benefit an individual/group in the off-campus community.
  • A majority of individuals responsible for project should be University of Connecticut undergraduate students.
  • The student organization can not have been found in serious violation of any University policy during the period under consideration.

The Division of Athletics is the proud sponsor of the Organization Community Service Award.


Student Organization Advocacy Award
Eligible Nominees: Student Organizations
Monetary Award: $250
     This award honors an outstanding student organization for the achievement of a remarkable goal or completion of a major project that significantly impacted students through advocacy or awareness initiatives. This can include, but not be limited to increasing awareness about a particular issue across campus or taking a leadership role in the advancement of an issue or cause on campus.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • The event/program/initiative must have been open to all undergraduate students on campus.
  • Nominees must have been a registered student organization while engaged in the pursuit and accomplishment of their project.
  • Event/Program must have been held since April 2004.
  • The organization must not have been found in violation of any University policy during the period under consideration.

Husky Pride Award
Eligible Nominees: University of Connecticut Registered Student Organizations or University recognized student-led program
Monetary Award: $250
 This award honors an organization for outstanding external representation of the pride and spirit associated with being a part of the University of Connecticut.

Additional Award Criteria:
  • Any related event/program must have been held during the past academic year.
  • Undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Connecticut-Storrs campus must comprise at least 51% of the organization's membership.
  • The organization can not have been found in serious violation of any University policy during the period under consideration.

Program of the Year Award
Eligible Nominees: Programs/Events meeting criteria below
Monetary Award: $250
Honors an organization or individual responsible for the development and/or execution of an event/program that significantly enhanced the social, recreational, educational, and/or cultural life of students and the general community at this institution.
Additional Award Criteria:
  • Event/Program must have been held since April 2007.
  • The event/program must have been open to all students on campus.
  • The event/program must have significantly enhanced the social, recreational, educational, and/or cultural life of students and the general community at this institution.
  • Any sponsoring organizations/individuals must not have been found in violation of any University policy during the period under consideration.
