Student Organization Support and Involvement InitiativesAt The University of Connecticut
The Department of Student Activities at the University of Connecticut is a comprehensive, one-stop resource for campus-wide student organization, involvement, leadership, community service, and event programming support. With four offices (Involvement and Leadership Programs, Community Service, Programming, and Business Services) the department provides students across campus with meaningful opportunities to become engaged, lead, and enhance their educational experience.
The Involvement and Leadership Office is a progressive office supporting and promoting student engagement and leadership in a variety of ways. From the Oak Leadership Agenda, to our Club Sports Programs, Media Groups and over 350 registered student organizations, this office is actively engaged in supporting student growth and development as individuals, members of a community, and as leaders.
The Coordinator for Student Organization Support and Involvement Initiatives is a new position the needs of which have arisen from an expanding portfolio of programs and services in the area. Some of the areas that this position will assist in developing and further enhancing include:
-
Oversight and further development of our student organization training program: SOLID. This new program has proven to be a very effective way to ensure that the officers of our 350+ student organizations are adequately prepared to lead their groups. Offering workshops throughout the year, this program hosted over 1200 students during the Fall 2007 semester in over 100 training sessions.

Further the growth of our student organization advisor support program: SOARS. This important program provides resources, information and support to our over 300 faculty and staff members who advise our organizations. With monthly lunches, recognition events, and important print and web-based support material, this program is proving invaluable to faculty and staff across campus.
-
Student advisement and support. Central to the role of the office, our advisement of students and student leaders is the key to our success. Whether it’s about improving their organization’s effectiveness, their role within the organization, their personal leadership plan, risk management, officer transition, or simply how to register their groups, our effective advisement of students is crucial.
-
Communication and resource provision for our student leaders. From the use of listservs, to brochures, dynamic websites, and personal appointments, the communication with our students, faculty, and staff is central to our success and effectiveness. Employing a variety of communication techniques, we strive to be responsive, engaging and always informative to all of the constituents we work with.
-
Promoting campus-wide involvement to students. In addition to supporting our student organizations, this office promotes campus-wide involvement and all of the opportunities for engagement and leadership across campus. Specific initiatives promoting student involvement include the semesterly Involvement Fair, the annual presentation to incoming students as part of our Weeks of Welcome program, our in-class presentations to students enrolled in a first-year experience class, and much more. The office has become a focal point for the entire campus in the area of student involvement and leadership.
In all, our programs and support of student engagement is broad-based, creative, experiential, personal, progressive and supportive of and contributive to students overall educational experience.
