Leadership Legacy Experience2008 Leadership Legacy StudentsThe University of Connecticut is proud to present its 2008 Legacy Students. These 12 students were selected from a highly competitive pool of students nominated by faculty across campus. Individually and collectively they represent a rich diversity of leadership experiences, personal accomplishments, and academic excellence. Through their actions these Legacy Students have personified character, integrity, maturity, and the potential that lies within every University of Connecticut student.
Bryan Banville
Area of Study: Biomedical Engineering Bryan has been heavily involved in a variety of outreach and volunteer efforts with both on- and off-campus programs including serving as a trip director for a university sponsored alternative breaks trip, developing and running his own international service trip to Belize, and being a founding member of a Habitat for Humanity chapter. He has also volunteered for the Red Cross and Special Olympics in his home state. In addition, Bryan is also a member of the co-ed a capella group on campus, Extreme Measures.
Juan Carmona
Area of Study: Resource Economics Born and raised in Venezuela, Juan is complementing his academic work at UConn by serving as a Community Assistant and a member of several organizations on campus. He volunteers his time as a Eucharistic Minister/Lector at St. Thomas Aquinas (Storrs), as a mentor to high school students in nearby East Hartford, CT, and back on campus as part of the First Year Programs. Juan hopes to return to Venezuela upon graduation and pursue a career in the petroleum industry.
Linda DrozdowiczArea of Study: Molecular and Cell Biology At twelve years of age Linda was singing at Carnegie Hall and soloing with a touring production of La Boheme. This love of the arts has allowed her to travel the world performing while at the same time completing her course work in pursuit of a career as a physician and medical school professor. In addition to studying abroad in Mexico for a semester, Linda’s ‘on campus’ experiences have included serving as a member of the Pre-Medical Society, Rubyfruit (a capella group), and a mentor in the Honors Program.
Rachael ForkerArea of Study: Political Science With the goal of becoming a U.S. Senator, Rachael has been active on campus serving as a representative on the Undergraduate Student Government, a Husky WOW Leader, and a UConn Connects Facilitator. Rachael has volunteered with a number of organizations and will be traveling to New Orleans over spring break (2008) to offer relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Alixandra GrassonArea of Study: Elementary Education Alixandra is committed to the pursuit of education – both for herself as well as for others. She has served as a mentor on campus to first year students as well as serving as an undergraduate T.A. for her peers. Off campus, Alixandra has served as a summer school teacher as well a volunteered with after school tutoring programs in the area as well as volunteering in elementary schools in the New Haven/Cheshire area of the state. All of this is consistent with her desire to become an English professor after graduation.
Pratistha KoiralaArea of Study: Biology/Molecular and Cell Biology Pratistha has complemented her academic work in the sciences by serving as an undergraduate research assistant since 2005. Additionally she recently authored an article that was published in the Plant Biotechnology Journal (2007) and served as the keynote speaker at the Connecticut Science Fair in 2006. Pratistha has also been a Husky Ambassador, Freshman Honors Facilitator, and a staff columnist for the Daily Campus.
Daniel LinArea of Study: Finance Dan’s interests and experiences span the spectrum from serving as a mentor for middle school children to being a member of A-Minor, a University a cappella group. Additionally, he serves as an undergraduate representative on the Asian American Cultural Center Advisory Board, an undergraduate T.A., and a member of the Finance Society. Dan has also been active with Habitat for Humanity, traveling with the organization to New Orleans offering relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Heeren MakanjiArea of Study: Molecular and Cell Biology As he works towards his goal of becoming a doctor, Heeren serves as a member of the Global Leadership Commission and the Pre-Medical Society. He also volunteers his time as part of the Husky Ambassador and Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs, as a PATH Mentor, and more. Heeren has also served as a facilitator for the Honors Freshman Seminar as well as a research fellow at a New York Hospital.
Ryan MatthewsArea of Study: History/Political Science With a wealth of experience on campus, Ryan is preparing for a career as future educator, perhaps in high education. His experiences include mentoring within the First Year Programs, significant work within the office of Community Outreach, including tutoring and participating in immersion trips, as well as serving as an orientation leader on campus and a summer school teacher back home.
Erica MorseArea of Study: HDFS/Psychology In addition to pursuing a double major in Human Development and Family Studies as well as Psychology, Erica is seeking a minor in Criminal Justice. This academic work is combined with her engagement off campus as a volunteer in the local chapter of the Big Sisters organization as well as serving as a tutor for the local middle school. Additionally, Erica attended the Georgetown University Institute on Philanthropy and Volunteer Service where she participated in their Leadership Scholar Program.
Camille PattersonArea of Study: Psychology/Political Science With a career goal in the law profession, Camille is actively complementing her academic work with experiences including serving as a peer mentor in the Peer Leadership Instructor program, working with local middle school students, supporting Habitat for Humanity in her home town, and more. Camille was one of the first students to complete the FUTURE Leaders program on campus and is a Building Manager in the Student Union.
Robert SlatteryArea of Study: Economics/Structural Biology and Biophysicse Robert has been actively involved in local planning and politics since arriving at UConn, serving on the Mansfield Downtown Partnership Committee, as well as creating an organization to increase student-voter turnout during the past congressional elections. Robert has interned at the Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis and has owned his own web-site development company. Robert hopes to earn a masters degree in economic systems engineering, using advanced computer modeling to improve economic conditions in developing regions. |
