Leadership Legacy Experience2007 Leadership Legacy ExperienceSpring 2007 saw the establishment of the University’s premier student leadership program, the Leadership Legacy Experience. With the generous support of Doug and Melissa Bernstein leading the way, the Legacy Experience got off to a strong start in its inaugural year. Thirteen individuals were selected from a highly competitive pool of students nominated by faculty across campus. Individually and collectively they represented a rich diversity of leadership experiences, personal accomplishments, and academic excellence. This richness was matched by the variety of experiences included as part of this exciting program throughout the year.
Brendan Bayers
Area of Study: Real Estate and Urban Economics As a student athlete, Brendan was chosen last summer to represent the University at the 2006 NCAA Leadership Conference. Throughout his time at UConn, he has served as the Community Service Chair for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is a member of the Academic Integrity Committee, as well as a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. Brendan hopes to pursue a career in Commercial Real Estate.
Adonis ChambleArea of Study: Communications Along with serving as the Performing and Fine Arts Chairman of S.U.B.O.G., Adonis is an active member of the Black Student Association, UConn Voices of Freedom Gospel Choir, and Impact. He has served as a peer leader and interned with an independent record label and has dreams of making an impact in the music industry.
Jennifer ElmanArea of Study: Animal Science, Dairy Management and Theater Production A student in the College of Agricultural and Natural Resources, Jennifer is an influential member of the 4-H society and Sigma Alpha, and has received the Robert Johnson Scholarship for Dairy Excellence, the York Family Scholarship for Citizenship, and the Kellogg Merit Scholarship. Jennifer has visited 15 foreign countries and has ambitions to earn a Master’s degree in Agricultural Education.
Emily GelbardArea of Study: Communication Disorders At UConn, Emily is a member of UConn Connects, Huskies Away From Home, and she serves as an FYE mentor. Emily plans on attending graduate school for speech therapy with the intentions of furthering her involvement in a school system helping elementary school students with speech disorders. Once established, she hopes to open a private practice and work with autistic and other special needs children.
Allison LemkinArea of Study: Molecular and Cell Biology Allison has had the unique experience of interning at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital as part of her study abroad experience in Cape Town, South Africa. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a UConn Presidential Scholar, and has been listed on the Dean’s List. Allison concerns herself with societal issues and is working towards a career in medicine and public health.
Matthew LinArea of Study: Molecular and Cell Biology, Physiology and Neurobiology In addition to his concentration in the sciences, Matthew is a member of the Men Against Violence Against Women organization, the Asiantation Mentoring Program, and the Asian American Student Association. Matthew has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Honors and Distinction in 2004 and 2005, and was a semi-finalist in the Chemistry Olympiad Regional. Matthew has visited 11 countries and will pursue a career in medicine upon graduation. Faculty/Staff Mentor: Dr. Angela Rola, Asian American Cultural Center
Charlayne McStayArea of Study: Chemistry Charlayne serves as a Program Coordinator for the Husky Ambassador Program, and is a member of the Global Leadership Commission, UConn Tap Team, Honors Council, and the Pre-medical society. Charlayne has been honored as a UConn Presidential Scholar and a National Merit Commended Scholar. She volunteers with various organizations and is working towards her dream of becoming a Pediatric oncologist.
Ryan McHardyArea of Study: Political Science Majoring in Political Science and Finance, Ryan also serves as the Residential Affairs Chairperson for USG while maintaining membership in of a number of other organizations including the Justice for Children International which he had a hand in founding. In addition to his academic and co-curricular pursuits, Ryan has worked full-time as a manager for a large telecommunications company.
Christian MendoncaArea of Study: Finance Majoring in Finance with a minor in Political Science, Christian is also involved with the Portuguese Cultural Association, Voices of Freedom Gospel Choir, S.U.B.O.G., and UConn Connects. He has also mentored for the UConn FYE program and has visited countries around the world including Portugal and Spain.
Alyssa MossArea of Study: Sociology Alyssa is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and an active participant in Community Outreach, UConn Relief Core, and Cross Cultural Solutions. She has dedicated her time to volunteer with the Special Olympics, has volunteered around the globe in such places as Mississippi, Tanzania, and South Africa. Alyssa hopes to pursue a career in the social work arena.
Samantha SherwoodArea of Study: Human Development and Family Studies Samantha is a member of UConn’s Honor Council, the Husky Ambassador Program, the national Collegiate Honors Council Board of Directors and more. After graduation she has hopes to continue on to law school and developing public policy and serving as an advocate for children and families.
Jonathan SierakowskiArea of Study: Business Management While majoring in business, Jon has a concentration in Entrepreneurship. He is the Editor-in-chief of the Daily Campus, the Chairman and CEO of the UConn Co-op Board of Directors, and a daring member of the Skydiving Club. Jon takes prides in his possession of vision and direction and hopes to someday own a business that would perform world-class restoration on classic automobiles.
David SteuberArea of Study: Political Science, Economics, Philosophy While tending to his triple-major, David finds the time to serve as the President of the UConn College Democrats and the UConn International Relations Association. He offers his time and devotion to political campaign volunteer work and plans to pursue a career in either law or the academics realm. |
