Leadership ProgramsLeadership Legacy ExperienceCivil Liberties Today: A Conversation with Nadine Strossen
![]() Nadine Strossen discusses civil liberties in today’s society. Thursday, February 5, 2009 Legacy was a proud co-sponsor of a campus-wide presentation by Nadine Strossen, former President of the American Civil Liberties Union. During this well-attended event, Nadine discussed the current state of civil liberties in our country as well as specific implications of recent administrative and judicial decisions impacting constitutional law, civil liberties and international human rights. ![]() Nadine meets with Legacy Students Yoo-Mi Thompson (L) and Elisabeth Werling (R). Nadine, a passionate supporter of civil liberties and a skillful debater, welcomed questions from the audience on a variety of topics including the closing of the Guantanamo prison, civil unions, torture, and right-to-die issues. The presentation and discussion were intellectually stimulating and challenged the audience to consider some important and difficult issues in American society. As one attendee commented, ‘It was food for the brain’. Legacy students and their mentors had an opportunity to meet less formally with Nadine, and each other, at an invitation-only, post-lecture reception in the Student Union. Student and mentors alike, enjoyed the opportunity to meet Nadine and discuss issues further, learn of her career path and share their views as well. The reception also gave Legacy students and their mentors the chance to catch up with one another and enjoy each other’s company. |
