Community Outreach

Student Leadership

Student leaders are an integral part to the success of community outreach programs. Program directors, trip leaders, and coordinators work together to plan alternative breaks, community service days, and semester-long programs. The coordinator positions also comprise the Executive Board, which works on projects that support student leaders and Community Outreach as a whole.

What does a Student Leader do?

Student Leaders work closely with program participants and community partners to ensure a meaningful service experience. They are responsible for volunteer recruitment, program planning, implementing service that meets self-identified community needs, and promoting reflection about social issues.

Student leaders are supported by a number of peer and professional resources. They attend a week of training before the start of the fall semester to develop leadership skills, build collaboration among student leaders, and prepare for their programs. Throughout the year they participate regularly in their programs and maintain frequent communication with Community Outreach staff and their community partners.

Executive Board

The Executive Board is composed of student coordinators who advise the Community Outreach staff. The Executive Board serves to:

  • Recognize the needs of the Community Outreach staff and leaders,
  • Act as a liaison among Community Outreach programs,
  • Develop student leadership,
  • Educate our peers by addressing concerns, and
  • Promote communication and facilitating new initiatives.
