Alternative Breaks

Alternative Breaks trips are student-run and promote service-learning through direct public service with regional, national and international communities to heighten social awareness, enhance personal growth and advocate lifelong social action. Students learn about issues as varied as urban poverty, violence, hunger, inadequate housing, domestic violence, and environmental damage. Trips occur during winter, spring, and summer breaks.

Semester-Long Programs

Semester-Long programs require students to commit to be involved in service program on a regular basis (usually at least once per week). Students work in schools, community centers, hospitals, and other not-for-profit organizations throughout the greater Storrs/Mansfield Area. As with other Community Outreach initiatives, Semester Long Programs are student-led and managed.

The programs are also organized into different Communities of Practice, small subsets of our programs that have similar characteristics or clients. Communities of Practice are designed to enhance our program's effectiveness through promoting collaboration, reflection, documentation, individual and mutual knowledge, and best practices.
