Friend to Friend is an initiative that seeks to help persons experiencing the loneliness and isolation of prolonged mental illness. We are recruiting volunteer partners to accompany someone in various social and recreational activities for two to four hours each week for a one year commitment. Volunteer partners often participate by attending a movie or concert, going shopping or on a picnic, going out for a coffee or simply sharing a common interest or hobby. Costs are covered by the program. Partnerships between volunteers and participants can help persons who experience prolonged mental illness to connect with natural supports in their community, enhance their quality of life and assist them in their ongoing recovery. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact: Diane Albini or Sara Thaxton, Program Coordinators at (860) 951-3325, x103 or email: FriendToFriend@chd.org .Do you remember what it was like to be a freshman in high school? Want to help a freshman have a successful four years of high school? Bristol Eastern High School is beginning a new program called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) for a group of freshman. The goal of AVID is to help these students take on challenging courses and gain acceptance and experience success into a 4-year college. Tutoring is a valuable experience for anyone interested in pursuing a career in education or youth services. Contact Kristin Irvine at 860-584-7071 or kristinirvine@ci.bristol.ct.us for more information! Bingo number callers are needed once a week on Thursday nights from 6:30-7:30. Call Dawn Curtin at 860-429-9933 for this fun volunteer opportunity. GUARD Dogs is now accepting drivers 19 years and older!!! This is a huge change from the previous 21+ driver requirement, and we hope it opens up GUARD Dogs to many more UConn students! We anticipate with this new change we will be able to staff more vans, have shorter wait times, and have a dedicated close-knit GUARD Dogs community. As always, we need members who want to help out the UConn campus and community in any way possible, so while we are looking for new drivers, the positions of ride along and dispatcher are just as important! That’s why we encourage everyone to sign up to be a NEW GUARD Dog member with a friend! If you are interested in becoming a new GUARD Dog member you can fill out a full membership application at: http://www.guarddogs.uconn.edu/forms/membershipapplication.html Workshops, Trainings and Conferences
Volunteer Abroad Opportunities
Make a High Impact Difference with Global Impact Corps. Unite For Sight is the world's leader in socially responsible, effective volunteering abroad. Global Impact Corps is an immersive global health experience for students and for professionals. All volunteers participating in Unite For Sight's international programs are Global Impact Fellows. They participate daily with local ophthalmologists, local optometrists, and local ophthalmic nurses to eliminate patient barriers to care and to facilitate comprehensive year-round eye care for patients living in extreme poverty. Through hands-on, structured training, volunteers gain a comprehensive understanding about best practice principles in volunteerism, global health, and international development. Global Impact Fellows gain skills and are nurtured to become new leaders in global health. Additionally, Global Impact Fellows may participate in the Global Impact Lab, an optional program for volunteers interested in pursuing global health research.
