Community Outreach
Welcome to the Office of Community Outreach!
As a part of the Department of Student Activities, Community Outreach offers students opportunities to engage in service related activities that enhance the quality of life of others in the community while enriching their own learning experience at the University of Connecticut. Our website provides UConn and local communities information about initiatives and resources related to volunteerism, community service, service-learning, and community partnerships.

- UConn Credits for Community Service Work:
If you are involved in volunteer work in a community agency or if you go on a service-oriented alternative break, you might want to consider taking a field internship course and earning credits. One possible course is Sociology 3990/1: field experience. Along with the volunteer time you spend in a social service agency (42 hours per credit), course requirements include a paper about sociological issues you are exposed to in your internship. This course is offered summer, fall, and spring semesters. You need to register before the term begins. Questions? Email: Professor Ratcliff at Bradley.wright@uconn.edu
- Help someone in need- Join the Friend to Friend volunteer program
The program is designed to partner a volunteer with a person who has a stable mental illness in hopes of fostering a friendship that will teach/model social skills for the client. It seeks to help persons experiencing the loneliness and isolation of prolonged mental illness by recruiting volunteers to accompany the client in various social settings and recreational activities, such as attending a movie or concert, going shopping or on a picnic, going out for coffee or simply sharing a common interest or hobby. Both the client and the volunteer will receive $10 each per week to help defray the costs of the activities they chose to do ($40 each per month total). Help someone who needs it the most. Contact Sara Thaxton at (860) 951-3325 x103 for more information.
