Student Activities BlogsMeg CarleyA Family AffairThis past weekend I went to California with my family for my cousin’s wedding. It was a great weekend with beautiful weather and a ceremony that could make Chuck Norris blush. While I didn’t leave my heart in San Francisco, I did want to reflect on the idea of family and what it means to me. My immediate family consists of my mom, dad, older brother, older sister and twin sister. My older brother’s less than four years older than I am, so we’re all very close in age. The biggest problem my family faces is location. While my parents and I live in Connecticut, my siblings are spread out all over the country. My twin sister lives in the City of Angels, my older sister’s in the Windy City, and my brother’s in Houston (I don’t know of any nickname for that one). We’re rarely able to all get together which is what made this weekend so special. All I have to say is thank goodness for Facebook because now I can relive the weekend through embarrassing pictures.
While my weekend with my immediate family was great, it’s good to be back at UConn with some of my other families. There are people that over the course of my time here at school has become more of a family to me than anything else. At the beginning of my junior year I became a trip director with Community Outreach which is the volunteer group on campus. Over the course of that year I became closer with the other students and faculty involved in the program. I’ve met some of my closest friends through Community Outreach and it’s the place on campus where I feel most comfortable (although I do also enjoy the Student Union Food Court). This year I live off campus in Coventry on the lake and yes, it really is that awesome. I live with five other girls and we’re split up with four girls having their own room upstairs and my friend and I are in the basement (don’t worry, it’s furnished). It’s a great house and I love it, even if the basement floods every once and a while. To me though, it’s not just the house but the people I live with that make it such a cool (yes, cool) place to be. Each of them brings something different to the group and I truly enjoy each person’s company. They’ve become a family for me and while California was fun, it was nice to come home on Monday night. Every person has the family they’re born into and the families they choose for themselves. I don’t consider either group better than another but I do think they’re all fantastic (I’m trying to use various synonyms for great). While I won’t be with my immediate family again until Christmas, I have no reason to complain. As Kyla Pratt on “The Proud Family” used to say, “F is for family and mine’s the bomb”.
