Career Choice

It has been a while since I’ve written; I had a very interesting winter break. I bought my first car - a 2000 VW Golf. It’s green and very sporty, I absolutely love it! And since it’s a diesel it gets great mileage. It’s an automatic and while I would have preferred a standard I love everything else about the car so I don’t mind the automatic-ness of it. So far it’s been to Providence and New Haven but over the summer I plan on taking it even farther. It’s such a huge sense of freedom having my own car and I plan on taking full advantage of it. Maybe I’ll take it down to Delaware, where one of my friends, whom I haven’t seen in a long time, goes to grad school.

My Car
This isn’t my car but this is one just like it, so cool!

Surprisingly, my new car wasn’t the best part of my vacation. The best part was that I discovered what I really want to do with my life. I want to be a lawyer. I know it’s a big shift from Student Activities to Law but I’m just so excited about being a lawyer. Now, I DO NOT want to be a corporate or a personal injury lawyer. I want to go into either environmental or criminal justice law. Environmental law because I have always been interested in helping our planet. When I was five, I told my mom that when I grew up I wanted to make a million dollars and buy all of the rainforests. I realize now that a million dollars wouldn’t buy all of the rainforests but as a lawyer I could protect the rainforests (that are like Earth’s lungs) and the rest of the Earth’s natural spaces. Perhaps I could even assist in slowing climate change. I’m no scientist, so this is my way of contributing towards that end.

I’m interested in the criminal justice system, more specifically in the Public Defender’s office because I want to help those who can’t help themselves. There are many Americans who end up in jail because they cannot afford a good lawyer to represent them. As a public defender I could be that good lawyer and help to correct some of the injustices experienced by the poor of this country. I’ve actually taken some steps towards this as I recently applied for a summer internship at the CT Department of Justice. If I do get in, it will give me a more in-depth understanding of how our legal system works. Even if I don’t get the internship, I plan on volunteering there over the summer to get the experience.

The Hartford Courthouse where I will hopefully be interning this summer.

So, that’s what’s new in my life, I’m really excited and actually want to go to my classes now since I know doing well in them will make it easier to get into law school! Other than that, we just had SUBOG’s Winter Weekend and I have to say it was the best I have ever seen! On Wednesday we had 4 events. I’m just so proud of the board they were so supportive of each other and everyone went to each other’s events.

We did have Nick Swardson cancel his show due to illness, but I think we handled that pretty well and the Daily Campus was really good about printing briefs about it on short notice so I’m very thankful to them. And he’s coming back on March 3rd so it all worked out in the end.

Finally, I just applied for President of SUBOG for next year! And I’m just waiting to hear back from the selection committee about it ::fingers crossed::
