Student Activities BlogsMiguel AlmodovarA Spoonful of Fun Indeed! So it’s now the end of October and we’ve already had snow followed by shorts weather (quite a rollercoaster!). SUBOG has been hard at work during the wild weather putting on some great events. I’m sure everyone noticed how awesome Homecoming was this year. We had our traditional events like the parade, lipsync, and the pageant but we also added a CARNIVAL to the week as well. Our Special Events committee put it on and it was fantastic. We wanted to have something after the parade to get more people to hang out and to draw more alumni back to campus with their families. If you missed it here’s a quick recap. We had a swing ride, inflatable obstacle course, the Scrambler (like the Starship 2000 at Playland in Rye, CT or the Rotor at Lake Compounce), and lots of free food. I probably had enough fried dough that day to feed an elephant. It was a great event and we had around 1,000 people throughout the day. ![]() SUBOG inflating J.J. before the Homecoming Parade, look how cute he is!! Other than that Lipsync was amazing! All the groups put in so much effort and it really showed. We also had BJ Novak, (Ryan from the Office) come to do stand up comedy on the Saturday of Homecoming. He was so funny it’s easy to see why the “Office” is so hilarious with him writing it. The coolest part of the show was when he called Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapur) in the middle of the show and had us say how much we liked the wedding episode that she wrote. I also got to meet him after the show, which was sooo cool. He was a really nice guy in person, which was a relief because my friends were in love with him! ![]() My friends Gaby, Aloise and I with BJ I’m also halfway through my PLI experience. I’ve gotten way more comfortable in the classroom and more confident in my ability to facilitate discussions with the students. We’ve already covered so much material this semester. I’m very impressed with the students’ ability to absorb new ideas so quickly and to then have an insightful discussion afterwards. I’ve also been reading their papers, which is a whole new experience for me. I like their papers because I get to hear all of their ideas. This is important because not everyone feels comfortable sharing what they really think in class. Though it has been challenging I’m very glad I’m doing PLI this semester. As far as Community Outreach goes we’re getting ready for participant interviews. The deadline for submission is coming up soon and then we’ll be doing quick interviews with each potential participant. This is a new thing for Alternative Breaks to do but I think it will go a long way towards forming cohesive teams. I’m really excited to get the teams set so we can begin preparing for the trip! I am really glad I’ve taken on C.O. this year, it had opened my mind to so new many ideas. The students and staff of that office are great and they have contributed so much to me already. Spring Break in New Orleans is going to be such an amazing experience I can hardly wait! Finally, I received my LSAT scores back last week; I did very well (better than I expected!!!). So now all I have to do is polish my personal statement and finish the forms on the applications. So, in a couple weeks I’ll be all done and then I’ll just have to wait to hear back from schools. The waiting will be a relief because then I’ll be able to focus on academics again. I mean I’m a History major but sometimes it seems like I should be getting a degree in SUBOG and a couple credits for just applying to law school haha. |
